The Moonstone has been released by Acorn Media as a double DVD. Starring Vivien Heilbron, Robin Ellis, and John Welsh it tells the story of a huge yellow diamond, been stolen from an Indian shrine.
Rachel Verinder receives the stone as a gift on her birthday and does not realise that it has been passed to her in a sinister form of revenge and was acquired by means of murder and theft. The beautiful jewel is also rumoured to bring bad luck.
The stone disappears on the very night it is given to Rachel, and the tale concerns the unveiling of the culprit after the intervention of Sergeant Cuff, a famous London detective.
Writer Wilkie Collins was famous for his unconventional private life and critics credited him with the invention of the English detective novel. The Moonstone's Sergeant Cuff became a prototype for the detective hero in English fiction and Dorothy L. Sayers called the novel "probably the very finest detective story ever written."
The double DVD is priced at £19.99 and includes a Wilkie Collins biography, bibliography and cast filmographies.
