A Horseman Riding By
This is the magnificent saga, adapted from the book by R F Delderfield, of rural Edwardian England for 1900 to the end of the Great War. Nigel Havers stars as Paul Craddock, invalided out of the army during the Boer War to become Squire of the long neglected Devonshire Estate of Shallowford. The series charts Craddock's new life in the Valley which is challenging because of the Valley's inhabitants and the harsh consequences of war.

The series was dramatised for BBC Television by Arden Winch, John Wiles, and Alexander Baron, and first broadcast on BBC 1 in 1978.

The Last Hot Summer1907: Paul and Claire are now married and it is time for the local Fete which includes and unnerving reading for Claire. Doctor O'Keefe and John Rudd make an announcement.
Call To Arms1914: War has broken out and the vallet says goodbye to its young men. James visits from London with news of Paul's ex-wife. Professor Sholtzer faces some wild accusation.
Death of a Hero1915: Paul receives a white feather anonymously. Will codsall returns sick and shellshocked from the War causing concern with the locals and Elinor, his wife.
The Profiteers1916: Will Codsall's brother sydney calls on the Squire from the Forestry Board to advise him about a money making opportunity. Dandy and Pansy finally find happiness.
The Bad Season1917: Paul is away at War. Claire has returned to nursing and Shallowford is now a convalescent home. Norman Eveleigh behaves badly but Claire redeems the situation.
The Service1918: Paul returns on leave and Claire is overjoyed to have him home. He faces the task of telling his son Simon that his mother is dead. Claire tries to soothe the troubled Hazel Potter.
The Old and the New1919: News reaches the valley that the Squire is missing in action, presumed dead. This causes despair to Claire and the locals. James visits from London and gives the true version of Paul's fate.
