This series is a classic. Jon Pertwee, famous from radio's Navy Lark, and TV's Doctor Who made this series his own, literally. When no-one wanted to do it, he continued plugging away until he persuaded someone at Southern Television to produce it. It is a simple idea, a scarecrow with a life of his own who meets all sorts of other 'inanimate' figures, including the love of his life Aunt Sally, a very prim and proper fairground manakin, and usually cause havoc in a childish way. Of course, grown-ups can't see all these goings on, with the exception of the crow-man, played superbly by Geoffrey Bayldon, but children can. The last two series have been released on video and DVD by Delta Music Plc and make up a superb set. So far there are six volumes, each containing 3 episodes (except the Christmas Special which gets a disc of it's own) and whilst they are not as long as some DVDs on the market at present (each episode from the normal run of the series was about 25 minutes long), they are very reasonably priced. The cover details are very well researched, and a host of stars crop up throughout the series. A young Charlotte Coleman (Four Weddings and a Funeral) plays one of the children, Barbara Windsor (Carry On, Eastenders) is Saucy Nancy, and Bill Maynard (Heart Beat), Bill Pertwee (Dad's Army, Billy Connolly, Beryl Reid, Jimmy Jewel, Lorraine Chase, Bernard Cribbins, and Connie Booth (Fawlty Towers) all make appearances. With the miriad of childrens television available now, it is nice to know that some of the classics stand up (and not just for nostalgia reasons) and can still amuse and occupy kids - these DVDs have been invaluable when I have been looking after friends children!Series One
